Recommended Reading List

Being an avid reader I thought I'd start a new segment on this blog to recommend various books on marijuana for reading. These would be books recommended to me by others, some I have read some I have not. If you have a book you wish to recommend please feel free to send me an email or make a comment.

Here is my recommendation today:

Mom's Marijuana: Life, Love, and Beeting the Odds is the tale of one mans battle against hodgkin's disease. While it is not particularly relevant to the legalization movement, in fact the author barely touches on the subject, however it is an inspiring tale of a man battling a very deadly foe, and winning. He shares the entire ordeal of his road to a cure in as much detail as you'd ever want without going through the experience yourself and he does it in a manner that keeps you turning the page.

It may seem a little odd to be recommending this book here on this blog, however it seems very relevant in my mind.

Google Adsense

I have some ads on this blog, I am sure you noticed. It's to help fund me keeping this site up, I don't mind admitting I prefer to get paid for my writing on here, I'd love it if blogging became my full time job, but a) I am just not that willing to pimp myself, and b) I like my blogs to have actual information not 98% ads.

I have never found the ads intrusive or that far off topic, so I have never had a reason to question the need for ads. However after writing my latest entry I found something beyond funny. There was an add for www.drugfreeworld.org with a looped image saying "they said marijuana wouldn't lead to harder drugs" then a pause followed by a new screen saying "THEY LIED!". I found the ad so funny I had to go to the site and take a look. I ordered one of their pamphlets. We shall see if its all its cracked up to be. Based on the ad I think it should be amusing. Stay tuned, I will post the details.

Grow ops reaching epidemic

CP24's website posted this amusing article a while back that I have been meaning to address. Apparently Canada has earned the title of "source country" for marijuana. Well duh, no kidding. OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino buys into the US's fanatical approach to drugs stating that "It's a black eye on Canada when you have the United States... refer to us as a source country of marijuana." Well, in response to Commissioner Fantino I say, its a black eye on this country when you have the cops arresting people for using a drug which has less negative long term effects than a diet high in fat.

Fantino is apparently most alarmed at the continued increase of organized crime involved in marijuana production and distribution. "Organized crime will use whoever and will do whatever (to) achieve their goals and objectives, which is to make these obscene profits illegally." Finally this cop says something I can agree with. Organized crime is a bad thing, that gangs continue to profit from marijuana is a bad thing, that violence is used to protect their profits is a bad thing. What I disagree with is Fantino's solution. Fantino want's tougher drug laws in Canada, and he has a hard on for US style war on drugs despite knowing that the war cannot be won.

So who the hell wants to fight a war that cannot be won? Why would Fantino buy into this madness. Why won't he bother to examine the facts. Sure marijuana trade can be one wrought with violence and criminal activity, you know how to solve this, change the law and legalize it.

I know, I know, I have said this a thousand times on this blog but its simple. To take the power out of the hands of organized crime you MUST put them in the hands of someone else. Marijuana use is not going away plain and simple, its not particularly dangerous, so why not just call a cease fire on the users and make it legal and make a regulated distribution system to take the power from the hands of the gangs and put it into the hands of ordinarily law abiding, tax paying citizens? What is the use in persecuting so many people for using a drug that the vast majority of us have at least tried.

Are the gangs going to vanish? No of course not, they will shift to other drugs, but at least cops can focus on what's important and arrest the right people. History has proven again and again that prohibition simply does not work.

Best of Luck to Ganga Gourmet

According to CBS4 in Denver a medicinal marijuana dispensary opened with a twist. Ganga Gourmet is a full service restaurant that serves marijuana laced foods to discerning medical marijuana patients. This is definitely a unique way to provide the marijuana patients with their weed, I wish them the best of luck.

Marijuana and Autism

Good Morning America's website featured a story about a mother who has been giving her child marijuana in order to combat the effects of autism on her son. Her son was losing weight and they could not get him to eat, he was violent and a danger to himself and everyone around him. Marijuana calmed him down and made him want to eat again.

I highly recommend everyone read the article. For an American news program it is surprisingly well balanced, despite some factual errors.

Factual errors:

Statement:
"It can cause psychosis, may lead to schizophrenia."
Truth:
There has been no studies that found any causality links between either psychotic episodes nor schizophrenia and marijuana.

Statement:
"And while marijuana may be available in pill form"
Truth:
THC is available in pill form marketed under names such as marinol, however this is not the same as marijuana. While they did point out this later on in the article to some extent I still felt it was misrepresented as THC does not equal marijuana, THC is just one of the active ingredients of marijuana. And a point they did miss out was the dose of THC is not as easy to control with marinol since each pill is considerably higher dose than you would normally get with a single joint or some pot brownies.

In Good Company - William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare, THE Bard, the best known english language poet period. Arguably one of the best fiction writers of all time, but certainly one of the most unique writers of history. His works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonets, 2 long narrative poems, and more.* I don't think there is a need to go into the history of William Shakespeare, his plays are required reading at most schools in a variety of levels.

I myself am a huge fan of the works of Shakespeare. Richard III was the first play I ever saw of his, and I was hooked. Throughout my life I have seen many of his plays and I have loved them all, with the exception of an adaptation of Macbeth put on in London Ontario which for some inexplicable reason had all the characters dressed as if they were fighting in WWI.

In addition to his plays and poetry Shakespeare is a wordsmith in another way as well, an entirely literal way. The english language is an ever changing, and the language we speak now has nothing to do with the old or even middle english. The fact that it is constantly growing, changing, and evolving is a good thing, it means it is a living language instead of a dead and stagnant one. The more people speak a language the more they invent colloquialisms and slang, as colloquialisms and/or slang becomes more common the more likely it is to be adopted into formal speech and thus become legitimate words. People invent words all the time, and writers are particularly adept at this. Shakespeare was definitely no slouch in this regard. Depending on who you talk to he coined between 1,700 and 8,000 words. Imagine a world where words such as accommodation, aerial, amazement, assassination, bump, critic, gnarled, hurry, generous, majestic, inauspicious, road, sanctimonious, pious, and many more weren't part of our vocabulary. **

In other words Shakespeare was a genius in his own right. But was he a pot head?

Well, this is hard to ascertain. Marijuana, cocaine, opium, and many other narcotics were available in his time, and they were commonly used, although rarely recreationally. Marijuana was known throughout the ages, including Shakespeare's time as a medicinal herb and was often prescribed for a wide variety of ailments, Shakespeare's son in-law was a physician and would thus have extensive knowledge of the benefits of marijuana and it is likely that this knowledge would have been readily available to Shakespeare. Critics will argue that Pope Innocent VIII banned cannabis 80 years before the Bards birth, however, much like today, pronouncements in this regard were often ignored, and various medical texts from the time still listed cannabis as a viable herbal remedy for many ailments.

Sure this evidence is specious at best, but surely you don't think I'd leave it at that do you? Ok lets get onto the REAL evidence shall we. Dozens of clay pipes were discovered in the garden of Shakespeare's land and date to the time Shakespeare lived, it is possible they were not his, but it is rather likely they were. Sure, clay pipes alone aren't proof enough, but gas spectrometer tests demonstrate that the contents of these pipes were a variety of substances, several containing traces of cocaine, and at least one containing clear traces of marijuana. These pipes were packed with dirt from the garden when they were tossed aside protecting them from modern contaminants.***

Best Halloween Costume Evah!

Ok I agree, I sound so insincere when I say "evah" I promise not to use it again. But seriously folks check this out. It is by far the best Halloween costume I have seen. The guy deserves a prize for that one. Kudos to the person who made that costume, now if his date went as a bong it would be just a match made in heaven.

Why the Marijuana Party is Not the Answer

Ok everyone knows I am pro legalization of marijuana. So why then am I writing an article that slams the Marijuana Party, simply put they can never and will never achieve their goals, at best they will assist others in achieving it.

Most critics of the marijuana party claim they are a one trick pony and have no platform other than the legalization of marijuana, and while this may be true in some ridings, for the most part this is not true. I have spoken with various candidates for the marijuana party, they are always intelligent, articulate, and politically aware beyond just the marijuana issue. Really they should be the the ones to take the fight to Ottawa, but they won't, not as long as they are members of the Marijuana Party. As long as the Marijauna party remains as it is they will never become a political player, and unfortunately thats the way the party seems to want it. They think its a good thing that the are a party they are decentralized, it is not.

In order for a party to bring forward marijuana two things must occur, they must be centralized, organized, and act like a political party, and the second thing (oh so simple) have a name that does not pick on any one specific issue.

Beyond the Marijuana party being a disorganized brood of smaller political riding association based parties the very name takes the power out of the party. People see the name and think of the Marijuana party and its members as a one trick pony, they want legalization of marijuana and nothing else. It doesn't matter how wonderfully written the platform of an individual candidate is, the party will drag that candidate down.

What Canada needs is more political activists that actually get involved in politics. We need people to join parties, change views become candidates and work the system within. We need serious candidates in serious parties to bring forth the matter of legalizing marijuana and changing all the laws in Canada that have no logical purpose. What Canada needs is for Canadians to give a damn about politics again, what Canada needs is a charismatic political leader with the power to inspire change. Who can this leader be? Its not Layton, its not Ignatieff, its certainly not Harper, so who is it? Is it you?

Prohibition Vs. Prohibition

Prohibition of Alcohol is a thing most people agree was a dismal failure. It is widely agreed that Prohibition of alcohol in the United States spurred on gang violence and was a gross violation of personal freedoms. Despite this wide held belief almost all politicians and a good chunk of society still feels that prohibition of drugs is a good thing. Lets compare prohibition to prohibition and think very carefully about the differences.

Alcohol Prohibition

  • deemed bad for the moral fiber of the United States
  • causes a variety of health issues
  • despite the prohibition of alcohol use flourished throughout the ban
  • since legal sale was banned illegal organizations took over the sale of alcohol
  • gang violence rose
  • general public began taking the letter of the law much less serious and due to government propaganda trust the government less
  • individual rights are infringed upon
Drug Prohibition
  • deemed bad for the moral fiber of the United States
  • various drugs cause various health issues to varying degrees, many considerably less serious than alcohol
  • despite the prohibition of drugs use flourishes to this day
  • since legal sale is banned illegal organizations have taken over the sale and production of drugs to the point of essentially taking over entire countries
  • gang violence is on the rise directly related to drugs
  • the general public does not take the drug laws serious at all and due to government propaganda trust the government less
  • individual rights are infringed upon

So what is the difference between the prohibition of drugs and the prohibition of alcohol. I say there is no difference. I challenge anyone out there to find a legitimate reason for the prohibition of drugs that does not involve moral obligations.

Marijuana growers upend hard-luck California town -- latimes.com

This is an interesting article that really seems contradictory. In it pot growers are BLAMED for increasing property values, bringing industry and an economic boom to this small town. And when I say blamed, I mean they are actually blamed. The article portrays marijuana growers as evil while pointing out that land value in the small town has increased tenfold, and businesses are profiting from the growers buying local. So where is the problem? Oh ya kids are openly talking about growing marijuana might be a viable career choice after high school, which I think is better than there options before growing became a growth industry here, which was they had not options other than leave.
