Marijuana Harmful to Fetus?

Anti-prohibition activists love to point out that Marijuana is a relatively harmless drug, and some even go so far as to claim it his safe even for pregnant women to use. Well, while I am anti-prohibition, and agree that pot is relatively harmless I always cringe when I hear that it is safe for pregnant women to use and a Swedish study may vindicate my skepticism on this matter.

I have always thought that when it comes to pregnancy it is better to be safe then sorry, and any smoke inhalation constricts airflow which means the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream is reduced which means the amount of oxygen the baby is receiving is reduced. However this new study from Sweden indicates that it is possible that THC may have a significant effect on the growth of a fetus’ brain, they came to this conclusion by observing that endogenous cannabinoids, the chemical similar to THC, play a significant role in how nerve cells communicate with each other.

Of course this study appears to be far from conclusive it does mean that pregnant women should not get high, which is a bad idea regardless.

  1. While it is logical that no pregnant woman should use drugs without medical overview, is there any news or fact here, especially linked to babies? I don't see one? I mean, there are no facts, nothing, nada. Only thing there is, "a new study found what was ALREADY known, and well, we just think it's bad for babies! it has to be bad ! Cannabis is bad m'kay!(and don't ask why!)".

So, where is the link with babies, now, where is the study? seriously? I hate propaganda against Cannabis, and without facts, this is just anti-Cannabis propaganda.

  2. No there is no fact, it is far from conclusive. However there is reason to think that THC could seriously alter the brain chemistry of the fetus while it is developing. It is far from conclusive and certainly not evidence that Cannabis should be banned, however it is further evidence that, as you yourself said dstz, no pregnant woman should use drugs without medical overview. I agree that the original article was written in a tone which was in line with the usual anti-cannabis propaganda, however no evidence pro or con should be ignored.

    Thank you for your comments.
